The state of Utah (UT) defines electric bikes as a bicycle with an electric motor that has a power output of not more than 750w, fully operable pedals on permanently affixed cranks. It is fully operable as a bicycle without the use of the electric motor; and is one of the following:
An individual under 16 years of age may not operate a class 3 electric assisted bicycles.An individual under 14 years of age may not operate an electric assisted bicycle with the electric motor engaged on any public property, highway, path, or sidewalk unless the individual is under the direct supervision of the individual's parent or guardian.
Helmets are required for bike riders under 18 years old.
Electric bikes are allowed on all roadways as far right as practicable except when making a left turn. Electric bikes are allowed on bike paths and trails unless posted otherwise.
An individual may operate an electric-assisted bicycle on a path or trail designated for the use of a bicycle.A local authority or state agency may adopt an ordinance or rule to regulate or restrict the use of an electric assisted bicycle, or a specific classification of an electric assisted bicycle, on a sidewalk, path, or trail within the jurisdiction of the local authority or state agency.
